Mystery shopping is an effective method of observation. In marketing and the social sciences, observational research (or field research) is a technique for conducting social research that entails direct observation of phenomena in their natural environment. This distinguishes it from experimental research, which employs a quasi-artificial environment to eliminate spurious variables and manipulates at least one of the variables.
