Find a GPS Tracker in Your Car –
Private investigators are frequently believed to use vehicle tracking devices to keep tabs on a subject’s whereabouts. While this is possible, vehicle tracking devices are more frequently utilized by the general public and businesses. For instance:
To assist fleet management companies in locating company vehicles.
Taxi companies are responsible for vehicle dispatch.
Suspicious spouses to ascertain the whereabouts of their significant other.
Trackers are available for purchase online from a variety of vendors who sell private investigation and recreational spy equipment. They are also available at a few specialty retailers that sell electronics, video surveillance, and GPS equipment. Due to the fact that tracking devices utilize GPS or cellular technology to determine their location, a subscription or service agreement is typically required to obtain data from the tracking device.
Vehicle tracking devices are classified into two broad categories:
GPS Tracking Devices That Are Monitored. Used to transmit real-time data about its location, the unit is equipped with a device similar to a cell phone that transmits data whenever the unit is in motion or at predetermined intervals in some cases. While some are hardwired into the vehicle, the majority are battery powered. Battery-powered tracking devices typically include a sensor that detects when the tracker is moving and initiates power and signal transmission, then turns off after several minutes of inactivity. Tracking data can be sent to either a computer connected to the internet or a smartphone, which makes it quite convenient.
GPS Tracking Devices That Are Not Monitored. These devices store waypoints onboard and do not transmit their location; instead, they function as a portable GPS device. While the vehicle is in motion, the GPS tracking device records waypoints at predetermined time intervals as coordinates to be plotted later. Unmonitored devices are less expensive because they do not require a subscription to monitor their activity, but must be retrieved and downloaded in order to obtain tracking information.
Step 1: Define Your Purpose
If you suspect that someone is tracking your movements using a GPS or cellular tracking device, there are three ways to determine whether the device is being used.
The majority of tracking devices are designed for legitimate tracking purposes, not for concealment. Specially designed concealment devices are typically mounted on the exterior of the vehicle and require extensive searching to locate.
While the appearance of tracking devices varies according to manufacturer and purpose, some general guidelines can assist you in locating one on your vehicle. Typically, it will resemble a small box with a magnetic side. It may or may not be equipped with an antenna or a light. It will be small, measuring approximately three to four inches in length, two inches in width, and an inch or so in thickness.
Ascertain that you have a flashlight on hand for peering into dark areas of your car. Additionally, you may wish to purchase an electronic sweeper and a telescopic mirror.
Step 2: Conduct a Physical Examination
Examine the Exterior
You want to check all possible hiding spots for a tracker. A tracking device mounted on the outside of your vehicle must be weatherproof and small in size.
Examine both the front and rear wheel wells with a flashlight. Feel with your hand in areas that are not readily visible. If the tracker is located in the wheel well, the magnet will need to be attached to a metal component, so look behind any non-removable plastic covers.
Examine the undercarriage. Utilize a mirror mounted on an extendable pole to inspect the area beneath your vehicle. Bear in mind that the undercarriage accumulates a great deal of dirt. If a tracker is attached, it is likely to be equally filthy and will require a keen eye to detect.
Consider the area behind your bumpers. While most bumpers lack sufficient space to conceal a tracker, they are an ideal location if space is available.
Examine the engine compartment. Lift the hood and search for a tracking device attached to the strut towers, the firewall, behind the radiator, or concealed among the battery, air ducts, and other components. It is improbable that a tracker would be installed under the hood due to the risk of damaging the tracker’s delicate electrical components. To learn more about our security services, contact us.
