Obtaining an Armed Security License in New York City

The journey begins with meeting the fundamental prerequisites. An applicant must be at least 21 years of age, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and be a U.S. citizen or legal resident. A thorough background check is mandatory, focusing on criminal history, mental health records, and fingerprinting, conducted by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).

The educational component is crucial. Prospective armed security guards must complete an 8-hour pre-assignment training course, which provides an overview of the role and responsibilities of a security guard. This is followed by a 16-hour on-the-job training course, which delves deeper into the practical aspects of security work, including conflict resolution and emergency response.

A pivotal part of the licensing process is the 47-hour firearms training course, approved by the DCJS. This comprehensive program covers firearm safety, marksmanship, and the legal use of deadly force. Successful completion of this course requires passing both a written exam and a live-fire qualification test, ensuring that candidates demonstrate proficiency and responsibility in handling firearms.

In addition to these training requirements, applicants must obtain a special armed guard registration card, commonly referred to as a “guard card.” This card is issued by the DCJS upon verification of all training and background check requirements.

Continuous education is also mandated. Armed security guards must complete an 8-hour annual in-service training course to maintain their license. This course focuses on updates to laws and regulations, as well as refresher training on critical skills.
